There are different pathways to becoming an Australian citizen.

1- Permanent Residents (by conferral): You must be a permanent resident of Australia while applying for Australian citizenship. This method is for people 59 years and under, a parent of a child 15 years or younger and spouses of Australian citizens.

2- People 60 years or above (by conferral): You must be a permanent resident aged 60 and over to apply. You must be in Australia or have a lasting link with the country while being overseas to submit this application.

3- Your parent was an Australian citizen at the time of your birth (by descent): You are eligible for Australian citizenship under this category only if one or both of your parents were Australian citizens when you were born overseas. You must ensure that the person you claim descent from is your parent, not a relative/guardian/acquaintance.
